This was the first tour of its kind for the new administration. It’s been nearly 10 years since the City of Chicago has had a Housing Commissioner and a Housing Department. SCH was honored to receive Commissioner Novara and introduce her and guest to the valuable work we do for our clients and communities regarding the importance of housing counseling and issues related to affordable housing; keeping the topics relevant and at the forefront of discussions with City of Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot.
On July 30, Spanish Coalition for Housing (SCH) and six community-based organizations had the opportunity to host a trolley tour of Chicago’s Northwest side neighborhoods with the new Chicago Department of Housing Commissioner, Marisa Novara, joined by several local aldermen.
We were happy to host a stop at our Hermosa office to showcase the hard and meaningful work of our team of housing counselors. Ms. Jackson, a longtime client and landlord, shared her experience working with SCH and the importance of being a knowledgeable landlord through our Chicago Bilingual Landlord Association (CBLA). In addition, Mr. Maya shared his incredible story of how he overcame foreclosure and was able to purchase a home for a second time — this time, well informed and prepared with the help of SCH. Our Pre-purchase (Homebuyer Education and Counseling) Program helped him to ask the right questions, make educated decisions and access resources to achieve affordable homeownership.
We look forward to continue working with City of Chicago government officials, policy makers, community based organizations and households we serve to share our work, ideas and concerns for our community residents and their success as renters, landlords and homeowners; while supporting affordable and sustainable housing and homeownership across Chicago.
